The Valley Region has no operational landfill, instead there are Waste Resource Management Centres. Management Centres accept source separated materials ("source separated" means that waste is sorted at the point of generation, by the person generating it).
At the Centres, materials are grouped together and sent for processing or sent to a landfill outside our Region for disposal.
Source separated materials accepted at the Centres include:
Construction & Demolition debris
Leaf and yard waste
Residuals (which is garbage; things that can’t be reused, recycled or composted)
Household Hazardous Waste
Each Management Centre has a covered public drop–off area. All site customers/visitors check in at the scale house for directions and to have their materials weighed. All loads entering the site must be properly secured according to NS Dept of Transportation regulations.
Whenever possible, please wear appropriate safety clothing (gloves, boots, glasses) when unloading garbage if it includes glass, wood, shingles or any other sharp items.
